The Discover Dolgellau tourism group has recently achieved excellent national media coverage about the area and is now planning a major public event to raise Dolgellau’s profile as a food destination.

The group has arranged media coverage to encourage more visitors to come to the area outside of the main season including a 7 page feature in the February 2010 issue of BBC Countryfile Magazine, with further coverage due in other national and regional press.

“Taste Dolgellau/Blas Dolgellau” is a weekend of fabulous food, fine dining and foraging planned to run from Friday 15 – Sunday 17 October 2010. The weekend will showcase local food and dining specific to the Dolgellau area. Activities will range from wild food forays to a traditional recipe fair, from cookery demonstrations to gourmet food/wine tastings. The Dolgellau Farmer’s Market will provide a focus of the weekend and there will be a special event for the tourism / restaurant trade.

Debra Harris, chair of Discover Dolgellau and co-owner of Ffynnon boutique accommodation explains more: “We hope the whole community can find a way to take part in this event. We have some fantastic places to eat out in the area which make creative use of local food, and there are excellent local producers of meat, cakes and bread, honey, eggs, preserves etc. It’s something that already attracts visitors to the area but we need to shout about more.

We are asking local restaurants/cafes, food producers, shops and other organisations how they would like to get involved in the Taste Dolgellau weekend from 15 – 17 October and to benefit from a feast of promotion.”

Local organisations already signed up to take part include Dolgellau Farmers Market, Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Dolgellau Golf Club, Dolserau Hall, Medrwn as well as B & Bs, shops, food producers, activity providers and attractions.

Discover Dolgellau is asking local businesses if they can offer a special food related activity, event, menu, stall or window display during the weekend. Local people will also be able to contribute food related stories, articles or recipes for www.discoverdolgellau.com. Shops in the town are currently being asked for information to help enhance the shopping and food pages on the web site.

Taste Dolgellau will be promoted with new marketing activities including media coverage, email and web marketing, promotional postcards and fliers.
